Surgical instruments are a largely untapped potential for Additive Manufacturing (AM) in the medical device business. While prototyping of medical instruments have been in the engineer's toolbox for years, production using Additive Manufacturing has not become widespread despite fitting nicely into the three AM paradigms: customizable for a surgeon's technique or population, use of complex structures to decrease weight and reduce shipping costs, and redesign to reduce part numbers in assemblies.
