Next week, Illinois will elect its next governor. Many issues have been laid before voters, but Illinois manufacturers, the backbone of our economy, have received nary a mention from the candidates.
A critical pillar of the economy, the state's 12,000 manufacturing businesses employ nearly 600,000 of our residents and account for almost 13 percent of the state’s gross domestic product. We’ve been steadily recovering since the recession ended almost a decade ago, but not nearly as quickly as other Midwestern states. Between June 2009 and December 2017, manufacturing payrolls grew by 87,000 in Ohio, 110,100 in Indiana and 174,200 in Michigan, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Illinois added just 8,300.
