iBase-t Releases Solumina iSeries i090 with Updated Cloud

iBase-t, the company that helps its customers simplify how complex products are built and maintained, announced availability of the latest release of the Solumina iSeries Manufacturing Operations Platform, version i090, which delivers enhancements that drive efficiency in production and sustainment, improve ease-of-use, and support communication with suppliers around quality issues.

The Solumina Manufacturing Operations Platform consists of an integrated suite of MES, SQM, and MRO solutions designed for complex, highly regulated discrete manufacturers. Enterprise quality management is embedded throughout the Solumina platform, integrating quality best practices into every process across the enterprise. In addition to connecting manufacturing operations, quality, and sustainment management in a seamless flow of data across the value chain, the Solumina platform can be integrated with PLM and ERP systems to create a complete closed loop manufacturing solution.

Solumina iSeries, deployed as a cloud-hosted, SaaS solution, enables manufacturers and suppliers to accelerate the adoption of new digital technologies that can quickly drive business value. The i090 release of Solumina iSeries solves specific user limitations while improving functions throughout the manufacturing process.

In addition to a new look and feel reflecting iBase-t's recent rebrand, enhancements in the i090 release include easier management of raw materials and the ability to cancel or un-cancel work orders with just a few clicks.

"We are committed to continually evolving the innovation of Solumina with new features and improvements that meet our customers' needs, and deliver value fast," said Sung Kim, Chief Product and Technology Officer, iBase-t. "Solumina iSeries continues to provide a strong foundation for manufacturers looking to digitally transform their operations, and we remain focused on providing the very best solutions to meet that demand."

Solumina i090 also enables suppliers to use Solumina Supplier Quality Management (SQM) to provide feedback on discrepancies created for MES or MRO orders. With this new feedback channel, suppliers can add context to an issue assigned to them without rejecting the discrepancy or changing data in the discrepancy item, supporting more effective communication around quality. The i090 release also allows both Receiving Inspectors and Source Inspectors to split inspection orders and manage them separately, driving efficiency.

Protolabs Introduces Accelerated Anodizing and Chromate Plating for Machined Parts

Businesswire | July 18, 2023

Digital manufacturing leader Protolabs (NYSE: PRLB) has again expanded its CNC machining capabilities to allow for accelerated anodizing and chromate plating on aluminum components. From time of quote to manufacturing to shipping, customers can now get custom machined parts with plating in as fast as four days. “While traditional finishing processes like anodizing have been around for a while, never have manufacturers been able to consistently produce parts as fast at scale as we have at Protolabs,” said Greg Thompson, global product director of CNC machining. “An engineer can have fully anodized or plated parts on their desk within a few days of placing an order.” Anodizing and plating help prevent corrosion, strengthen parts, and improve cosmetic appearance. All plating options for machining are now live and available to customers when they upload a 3D CAD model at protolabs.com. Eligible materials include aluminum 6061/6082 and 7075. For anodizing, three specific types are offered: Type II (Class 1, Class 2) and hard-coat Type III (Class 1); for chromate plating, Type II is available. The addition of quick-turn plating builds on the digital manufacturer’s current options for CNC machining, which include advanced anodizing and chromate plating capabilities with flexible lead times. Customers with AS9100 and ITAR needs can access Protolabs’ precision machining capabilities and those with more complex, high-requirement parts can tap into the company’s digital network of manufacturers at Hubs. “We’ve promised our customers more capabilities across all our service lines this year, and our machining service is leading the way. Through our unique manufacturing model that pairs a network of global manufacturers with our digital factories, we can comprehensively serve the prototyping and production needs of our customers,” explained President and CEO of Protolabs, Rob Bodor. About Protolabs Protolabs is the fastest and most comprehensive digital manufacturing service in the world. Our digital factories produce low-volume parts in days while our digital network of manufacturing partners powered by Hubs unlocks advanced capabilities and volume pricing at higher quantities. The result? One manufacturing source—from prototyping to production—for product developers, engineers, and supply chain teams across the globe. See what's next at protolabs.com.

Apple Explores 3D Printers for Steel Chassis in Upcoming Smartwatches

Apple | September 06, 2023

This method will utilize less material and be more environment-friendly Apple is trying out this process with the steel Apple Watch Series 9, to be revealed on September 12 Apple's venture into 3D printing is under supervision of Rob York, Vice President at Apple Apple is quietly exploring the integration of 3D printers to craft steel chassis for its upcoming smartwatches, marking a potentially revolutionary shift in the company's manufacturing methodology. The concept involves leveraging 3D printing technology, which could significantly alter Apple's production landscape, streamlining its supply chain processes. This exploration could eliminate the need for cutting large metal slabs to shape the product, with potential benefits including reduced production time and a more environmentally friendly approach due to decreased material usage. Apple's stainless-steel timepieces, accounting for roughly 10 percent of the product line's overall units, have been produced using a more conventional method to date. This move towards 3D printing, thus aligns with Apple's longstanding commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility, revolutionizing the way it manufactures its products. However, a spokeswoman for the Cupertino, California-based company declined to provide further insights, leaving many questions unanswered. If the trials involving Apple Watches prove successful, the tech giant may expand this manufacturing approach to a broader spectrum of its products in the coming years. Though the exact timeline for the implementation of this technology remains undisclosed at this stage, the test run shows the commitment of the company. This new approach employs binder jetting, a type of 3D printing, to construct the device's general outline at a size close to its actual size, also known in the as 'near net shape.' The print is created using a pulverized substance, which then undergoes sintering, which uses heat and pressure for the material to compressed. The precise design and openings are then milled. This is one of the first instances in which binder jetting has been used to mass-produce a metal component. The company follows a pattern of utilizing the Apple Watch as a test case for new technologies. For example, it added steel frames to the iPhone two years after introducing them on the original Apple Watch. And this year's high-end iPhones will utilize titanium, a year after the introduction of the material on the Apple Watch Ultra.
