The race to a digital future

Manufacturers of all kinds have significant progress still to make as they move toward a digitally enabled future. Outliers such as California-based electric car-maker Tesla, which uses in-vehicle data analytics, advanced automation and robotics, and even a custom enterprise resource planning (ERP) system, remain by far the exception, not the norm. For most other manufacturers, this research highlights clear gaps across all six core digital categories (see below), with no one sector scoring 60 or higher out of 100. Our research evaluates manufacturers’ digital capabilities across the following core dimensions, using their relative progress in each to provide an overall score out of 100.

The Best of Both Worlds: Combining AM and IM to Master the Whole Life Cycle of Your Parts

whitePaper | January 2, 2023

Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Injection Molding (IM) are often perceived as competing plastic processing technologies. However, organizations must be ready to utilize and switch between different production technologies to address changing product requirements, shift production schedules based on market demands, or respond to supply chain crises. This includes making both technologies complementary, not exclusive.

SICK AG WHITEPAPER

whitePaper | June 3, 2022

Production and intralogistics in the consumer goods industry are currently undergoing significant changes. This is the result of rising cost pressures and the need for greater automation as well as increasing product variants and customization. The changes that are taking place also relate to the goal of digitization: Every sensor, every machine, and all people involved in the production and intralogistics processes should be able to communicate with each other at all times. The vertical and, in the next step, horizontal networking of sensors, machines and factories is the systematic further development of this digitalization.

An Additive Manufacturing Breakthrough: A How-to Guide for Scaling and Overcoming Key Challenges

whitePaper | January 11, 2022

While the technological maturity of AM has been demonstrated in specific industries, individual firms still struggle with its adoption and implementation at industrial scale. Companies underestimate the extent to which the adoption of AM is first and foremost a learning process that involves the entire value chain and requires specific AM expertise that needs to be acquired. Throughout this learning process, a wide range of challenges may hinder the progress and success of implementation.
